Poems and Drawings
Author: Josef Albers
Publisher: Yale University Press
In Poems and Drawings, first published in 1958, Josef Albers attempted to penetrate the meaning of art and life by the simplest, most disciplined means. This project was extremely important to Albers, who used its format to create complementary forms in both word and line that appear deceptively simple until they begin to disclose the authorâs insights into nature, art, and life. Conceived as a kind of artistâs book, the publication features 22 of Albersâs refined line drawings alongside the same number of his original poemsâeach appearing in both English and German. Printed initially in a limited edition and long out of print, this new edition of Poems and Drawings replicates Albersâs original book design and includes four previously unpublished poems that reveal playful and tender details behind Albersâs personal relationships, along with a new introduction by Nicholas Fox Weber. For admirers of Albers, Poems and Drawings will provide a closer look at a celebrated artist who was also an affectionate and articulate writer.

Kindred Spiritslooks at the influence of indigenous art from the American south west on modern and contemporary art. It juxtaposes funerary vessels, paintings, pottery, weavings and baskets from 14 tribes, including the Apache, Hopi, Mimbres, Navajo and Zuni, with works by Ansel Adams, Josef Albers, Max Ernst, Agnes Martin, Sumner Matteson, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Paul Strand and many others, in which tribal motifs, patterns and subject matter are adapted to modernist concerns. Also examined here is the impact of nineteenth-century anthropological publications by authors and illustrators such as George Catlin and Karl Bodmer, as well as Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's legendary Historical and Statistical Information, Respecting the History, Conditions and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States(1847-1857)-publications that provided the earliest portraits of Native American culture. Contemporary artists Andrea Geyer, Simon J. Ortiz and Nicholas Galanin offer reflections on the social and political significance of the Native American peoples and how these factors have shaped their own work.

Highlighting the rich diversity of effects Albers drew from a narrow range of colors, this publication is based around the groundbreaking Homage to the Square (A) (1950), the inaugural painting in the series that would occupy the artist until his death in 1976. The pairing of two palettes - black, white, and grey and an array of yellows - stems in part from Albers's 1964 series of lithographs, Midnight and Noon , which b rought together these two opposing color sets in a single portfolio. Together they address the limitless possibilities the artist found in color and form. Opening with an introduction by Nicholas Fox Weber, Executive Director of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, that contextualizes these works and their color palettes, this volume also includes Elaine de Kooning's historic text on Homage to the Square and Albers's own writing on the subject. Published on the occasion of exhibitions at David Zwirner's New York and London galleries in 2016 and 2017, this beautifully illustrated publication looks at one of the most influential abstract painters of the twentieth century.
