Tom Simpson was an Olympic medallist, world champion and the first Briton to wear the fabled yellow jersey of the Tour de France. He died a tragic early death on the barren moonscape of the Mont Ventoux during the 1967 Tour. A man of contradictions, Simpson was one of the first cyclists to admit to using banned drugs, and was accused of fixing races, yet the dapper 'Major Tom' inspired awe and affection for the obsessive will to win which was ultimately to cost him his life. Put Me Back on My Bike revisits the places and people associated with Simpson to produce the definitive story of Britain's greatest ever cyclist. The revised edition of William Fotheringham's classic biography, commemorating the fortieth anniversary of Simpson's death, features a new foreword and postscript further exploring the truth behind the legend.

A bookstore can be a wonderful, welcoming place of both commerce and curiosity. That's the goal for Woody, an American recently transferred to England to run a branch of Texts. He wants a clean, orderly store and lots of sales to show his bosses when they arrive from the States for a pre-Christmas inspection. Not easy given the shop's location in a foggy strip mall. And things keep going wrong. No matter how often the shelves are put in order before the doors are locked at night, when the staff returns in the morning, books are lying all over the floor, many damp and damaged beyond repair. The store's computers keep acting up-errors appear in brochures and ads and orders disappear completely. And even when the machines are turned off, they seem to glow with a spectral gray light. The hit-and-run death of an employee in the store's parking lot marks a turning point. One employee accuses another of making sexual advances and they come to blows. Between one sentence and the next, one loses his ability to read. The security monitors display half-seen things crawling between the stacks that vanish before anyone can find them. Desperate, Woody musters his staff for an overnight inventory. When the last customers reluctantly depart, leaving almost-visible trails of slime shining behind them, the doors are locked, sealing Woody and the others inside for a final orgy of shelving. The damp, grey, silent things that have been lurking in the basement and hiding in the fog may move slowly, but they are inexorable. This bookstore is no haven. It is the doorway to a hell unlike any other. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
Energy Time Series Forecasting

Energy Time Series Forecasting

Author: Lars Dannecker
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658110392
Pages: 231
Year: 2015-08-06
Lars Dannecker developed a novel online forecasting process that significantly improves how forecasts are calculated. It increases forecasting efficiency and accuracy, as well as allowing the process to adapt to different situations and applications. Improving the forecasting efficiency is a key pre-requisite for ensuring stable electricity grids in the face of an increasing amount of renewable energy sources. It is also important to facilitate the move from static day ahead electricity trading towards more dynamic real-time marketplaces. The online forecasting process is realized by a number of approaches on the logical as well as on the physical layer that we introduce in the course of this book. Nominated for the Georg-Helm-Preis 2015 awarded by the Technische Universität Dresden.
Multilevel Business Processes

Multilevel Business Processes

Author: Christoph Schütz
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658110848
Pages: 232
Year: 2015-08-25
Christoph G. Schuetz examines the conceptual modeling aspects of multilevel business processes without neglecting the implementation aspects. Furthermore, he investigates the advantages of hetero-homogeneous models for quantitative business process analysis. Multilevel models reflect the reality of many information systems. In this respect process-aware information systems are no exception. Multilevel models capture interdependencies between business processes at different organizational levels and allow for a convenient representation of business process variability which, in turn, facilitates the analysis of business processes across different organizational units.
Project Management at the Edge of Chaos

Project Management at the Edge of Chaos

Author: Alfred Oswald, Jens Köhler, Roland Schmitt
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662482614
Pages: 247
Year: 2018-03-21
Complexity is a gift that can be made available for the successful implementation of projects, and used to create a new order or to change an existing one. Based on scientific facts, the authors present a systematic approach, which integrates complexity and its multitude of facets and gives practical recommendations for dealing with complexity in projects. The methods paradigm in project management is currently undergoing a massive upheaval. Projects are complex entities that cannot be tackled using traditional methods, such as classical cause and effect approaches. Complexity, and the associated phenomenon of self-organization, is a natural, but hidden designer. It offers a great opportunity in its use as a key driver for the implementation of projects. This requires identification of the principles of complexity and then using these for project management. In this book, the latest findings from natural sciences and brain research are used and transferred within a practice-oriented framework. The authors describe the methods of complexity regulation in projects and how self-organization for the management of projects can be applied.

Speed, social change, historical inheritance and cultural gaps are key factors which have significant impact on global collaboration and global sourcing. The author explains how working in virtual teams in a global, multicultural environment requires a significant amount of organizational and behavioral change of people and organizations. Understanding cultural differences in working styles is important for successful global project management. Major theories of international management, company internationalization, cultural dimensions and distances will be discussed to develop cross-cultural competencies and conflict management styles for international project managers. They will understand modern theories and methods of international management and will be able to apply these to practical project management problems. They understand the benefits and challenges of international cooperation and know how to identify modes of cooperation that are relevant to the needs of international teams.
Perfecting Human Futures

Perfecting Human Futures

Author: J. Benjamin Hurlbut, Hava Tirosh-Samuelson
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658110449
Pages: 380
Year: 2016-02-22
Humans have always imagined better futures. From the desire to overcome death to the aspiration to dominion over the world, imaginations of the technological future reveal the commitments, values, and norms of those who construct them. Today, the human future is thrown into question by emerging technologies that promise radical control over human life and elicit corollary imaginations of human perfectibility. This interdisciplinary volume assembles scholars of science and technology studies, sociology, philosophy, theology, ethics, and history to examine imaginations of technological progress that promises to transcend the constraints of human body and being. Attending in particular to transhumanist and posthumanist visions, the volume breaks new ground by exploring their utopian and eschatological dimensions and situating them within a broader context of ideas, institutions, and practices of innovation. The volume invites specialists and general readers to explore the stakes of contemporary imaginations of technological innovation as a source of progress, a force of social and historical transformation, and as the defining essence of human life.

The dissertation mainly studies a novel method of subpixel stereo vision for Electronic cluster eye (eCley), a state-of-the-art artificial superposition compound eye with super resolution. In the whole thesis, The author mainly deduce the mathematical model of stereo vision in eCley theoretically based on its special structure, discuss the optical correction and geometric calibration that are essential to high precision measurement, study the implementation of methods of the subpixel baselines for each pixel pair based on intensity information and gradient information in transitional areas, and eventually implement real-time subpixel distance measurement for objects through these edge features. To verify the various methods adopted, and to analyze the precision of these methods, experiments are implemented in many practical scenes. This stereo vision method extends the ability of perceiving 3D information in eCley, and makes it applicable to more comprehensive fields such as 3D object position, distance measurement, and 3D reconstruction.

Places are social, lived, ideational landscapes constructed by people as they inhabit their natural and built environment. An ‘archaeology of place’ attempts to move beyond the understanding of the landscape as inert background or static fossil of human behaviour. From a specifically mortuary perspective, this approach entails a focus on the inherently mutable, transient and performative qualities of 'deathscapes': how they are remembered, obliterated, forgotten, reworked, or revisited over time. Despite latent interest in this line of enquiry, few studies have explored the topic explicitly in Aegean archaeology. This book aims to identify ways in which to think about the deathscape as a cross between landscapes, tombs, bodies, and identities, supplementing and expanding upon well explored themes in the field (e.g. tombs as vehicles for the legitimization of power; funerary landscapes as arenas of social and political competition). The volume recasts a wealth of knowledge about Aegean mortuary cultures against a theoretical background, bringing the field up to date with recent developments in the archaeology of place.
